GAMBIA IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT (GID) INVOLVEMENT IN ACTIVITIES OF REFUGEES

The Gambia is signatory to the 1951 Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. The Gambia has ratified the Geneva Convention on the 7th September 1966 after independence. The Gambia also went further to domesticate the 1951 Convention into its national laws (Refugee Act 2008) on the 17th November 2008. This was enacted by the President of the Islamic Republic of The Gambia Sheikh Professor Dr. Alhagy Yahya A.J.J Jammeh Babili Mansa the National Assembly. The domestication of the Refugee Act paved the way for the setting of the Gambian Commission for refugees in 2010.The Refugee Act is an Act to make better provisions for the management of refugee affairs in The Gambia by establishing the Gambia Commission for refugees and matters connected therewith.

The Gambia Commission for Refugees shall be the overall policy coordinator and manager of Refugee affairs in The Gambia, including their reception, treatment and the search for appropriate durable solutions. The Commission has a governing Board which shall, subject to the provisions of the Refugee Act, carry out the functions and manage the affairs of the Commission, receive and consider applications for the grant of refugee status, ensure the proper implementation of the Refugee Act and discharge such other functions and roles as the Minister of Interior may assign to it.

In addition after the signing and ratification of the 1954 Convention on the Status of Stateless Person and 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness by the Gambia government in 2014.  The Government of the Islamic Republic of the Gambia approved the National Action Plan to end statelessness in the country and appointed the National Focal Point for issues relating to Statelessness in the country. The National Focal Point is the Commissioner of the Secretariat of the Gambia Commission for Refugees.
